Election topics are spammers useful tool

Oct 21, 2008

According to New York Times spammers are seven times more likely to use Obama's name than McCain's in the bulk messages subject lines. This news hardly makes a splash. Phisher's task is to tempt the reader to the suggested links clicking. Surely they use the words most likely to attract attention. The above statistics refers to this September, hundred to one in October Palin's themed spam has beaten that of both mentioned candidates.
For ordinary users this fact may only mean adding extra spam filters. As they have never been perfect it is useful to scan your spam folder for false positives. However, some messages deserve your special attention.
The story is as follows.
A user scans his spam folder and finds a suspicious message confirming his registration with some dating site he had never been. He is about to deleting it when he notices that the indicated credit card numbers look too familiar. The account checking confirms the suspicion. The considerable sum wiped off.
However, it would have been a lot more painfully if he did not catch this message in the mailbox. The trick was that the hackers used his actual email account for some reason. After taking all the respective measures the guy even got a citation from FBI (!).
A basic spam analysis is a good idea.
